Various epidemiological and nutritional intervention studies indicate that diet plays a crucial role in the promotion and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Currently, a large amount of scientific evidence shows that the consumption of long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids produces a decrease in cardiovascular risk.

Recommendations on the consumption of omega-3 have been included in the guidelines of the major scientific associations, such as the American Heart Association (AHA) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), although with different levels of evidence. The recommendations of the WHO, FAO, AHA and ESC vary between 1000 and 2000 mg/day, but never less than 250 mg in reference to the independent risk indicator for death at lower doses.
